Content that has an optimum relevant keyword density is king . . . period. Having said this however; link popularity runs a very close second in importance and must be considered in tandem with a website's content relevancy. Initially, you want to begin making yourself familiar with some of the keyword searching tools available for free on the internet. It is important to be realistic, highly searched keywords and keyword phrases have stiff competition with most having Pay Per Click bids on them. This means that someone is willing to pay sometimes up to a few dollars just to have someone click on their link. The point of this excercise is to begin developing a niche keyword strategy from these search term derivatives. Derivatives and Niche Keywords:
Your focus at the outset should be on derivatives of the highly sought after keywords that are relevant to your web site. Instead of attempting to capture traffic from keywords and keyword phrases that have millions of web pages competing for them and that are searched thousands of times per month, think instead in smaller numbers. Look for related search terms that are searched a few hundred times per month, or "niche keywords" as they are referred to. To give you an example: the word "computer" has about 1.5 million search enquiries per month, while the derivative term "on site computer repair" has around 200 searches per month. Which search term is more likely to have less competition and therefore allow you to glean some free web traffic from it?
Applying Keyword Density to your web pages:
Each page of your site should be centered around a particular keyword or keyword phrase. This helps the search engines immensely in being able to determine if your site is relevant to the search term. There are various ways to achieve this but placing the chosen keyword or keyword phrase in all places that a search engine will look for it is the best underlying strategy. This includes: the page title, meta tags (coming up as a topic on the next page: Meta Tags), image alt tags and html link title tags but especially in the site content. Increasing your website's link popularity now becomes a complimentary strategy and has you establishing as many inbound links to each keyword optimized page using the chosen keyword phrase as a text link. Think about this for minute; a cleanly coded text link incorporating your chosen keywords and pointing at your now highly optimized web pages from higher ranked websites acts like rocket fuel towards your upwards search engine rankings. Have we driven the point home yet? Niche keywords and keyword phrases propel both of the two most important aspects of web site optimization in Content Relevance and Link Popularity. You can take this last statement to the bank and while we are at "the bank" let us talk about the advertising budget for your web site.
